Is "MusicDNA" the future of digital music & the... →
From Wired, comes a Reuters story on a company trying to come up with the next iteration of digital music. Basically it sounds very similar to what Apple’s doing with “iTunes LP” in that it gives you additional content and something to look at while listening to the tunes. It sounds like everyone wants to get back to the experience of vinyl and album cover art without the...

If man is five, the devil is six, what # is... →
Just discovered a great music blog, Slicing Up Eyeballs: The Legacy of ’80s College Rock, that has a story about the Pixies working up a deluxe reissue of Doolittle. This comes hot on the heels of Black Francis himself turning up on this coming weekend’s episode of the awesome Sound Opinions radio show doing a “classic album dissection” of said LP.
This Omnibus Edition of...

Prehistoric bird named for Lucero →
Memphis band Lucero has had the honor of having a newly discovered prehistoric bird partially named for their band. Click here for the rest of the story.
To hear a session at Ardent Studios that’s a great introduction to the band, check out ninebullets.net. For some tunes right from the band’s own site, click here. I’d recommend “I Can Get Us Out Of Here Tonight”...

The PUBLIC GOOD on the front page @Blurt! →
The Public Good, prime purveyors of Monumental DC Rock, is not just my cousin’s band (full disclosure), but they are indeed a triumphant band of music makers. Blurt-Online, a fairly new music magazine staffed by some folks who worked on Harp magazine when it was around have picked TPG for their “Best-Kept Secret” of January 2010.
There’s now an interview there with the...

Robert Zemeckis to remake The Beatles' "Creepy" -... →
From Yahoo News, the story of Robert Zemeckis remaking the Beatles’ animated film, Yellow Submarine. “Meh,” you say. “Feh!” says I. He’ll be remaking it using the 3D motion capture animation you’ve seen in The Polar Express and the recent A Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey.
Unfortunately… I find that brand of animation creepy. There’s...

Roky Erickson to release new album with Okkervil... →
Word comes today that Roky Erickson, of the legendary 13th Floor Elevators will release his first music in about 14 years or so in collaboration with Okkervil River. The title True Love Cast Out All Evil sounds like he’s not quite let go his fascination with good and evil and horror movie concepts.
If you want to see an amazing story of rise, fall and redemption, get yourself a look at...

New Album in 2010... from Jimi Hendrix! →
USA Today has a hot story about the opening of the Jimi Hendrix audio vaults. Deluxe editions of the albums, plus a compilation of previously unreleased material recorded back in 1969. These are due March 9 from Sony’s Legacy division.
This is probably the 4th or 5th time his catalog has been redone, and it occurs to me to ask “why again?” If my recollection is correct,...

Merle Haggard, Neko Case & Shelby Lynne on... →
Can’t say I’ve ever bought a Peter Wolf album, but the list of collaborators on this record sounds interesting and I’d be pretty positive in asserting right now that there’s not likely to be a tune as annoying as his early solo hit, “Lights Out.”
With her animal preoccupations, it makes perfect sense for Neko to be collaborating with a Wolf. Click the...

NPR story about obscure & out-of-print music on... →
Terrific story at NPR about how the web is making out-of-print music accessible, but not necessarily from the labels — it’s the bloggers and fans rescuing tunes from obscurity. Copyright law is still a sticky wicket on this front, but to my mind there’s no reason for any music or book to go “out of print” in this digital age.
Sometimes this scarcity does help the...
