Via the New York Times… an amazing story about a family in the Bay Area who were befriended by John & Yoko. If the following quote intrigues you, go read the rest.

Lennon liked to joke with the girls and play his harmonica, and one day he shared a new tune. “He played it on our piano,” Barbara Hong said. “He said, ‘This is a song I’m going to release soon.’ ”
 It was “Imagine.”

There’s a ton of John Lennon material coming up for what would’ve been his 70th birthday today, October 9:
—>PBS’ American Masters series has an episode coming up called LENNONYC and is offering hour-long podcasts of what seem to be the interviews for the program.  You can find those at iTunes.   And more on the film here.
—>The biopic Nowhere Boy seems like it’s out.  The Onion AV Club reviewed it.  It’s more about John’s pre-Beatle growing up with his Aunt Mimi.
—>Coming in late November also from PBS,under the Masterpiece Contemporary banner is LENNON NAKED, and stars recent Dr. Who Christopher Eccleston as John.  The film follows the end of his marriage to Cynthia and his introduction to Yoko.  Not very much available on this yet, but some info here.
—>The Guardian’s music blog has a nice tribute and some links to articles.  My favorite: The Daily Mail digitally ages a photo to see what John might’ve looked like at age 70.
—>Google has their John doodle.
—>Didja know that Bob Dylan wrote a letter on John & Yoko’s behalf regarding their immigration problems?  It’s true.
—>And of course, scads of Lennon catalog reissues.
