Don’t think I’ve ever seen this promo for Keith Moon’s debut single before. He looks like the lost Beach Boy in this photo.

PAUL DANO set to play young BRIAN WILSON in biopic.
You might remember him as the Preacher in There Will Be Blood. Rolling Stone has the full story here.

Mike Love may own the name “The Beach Boys,” but Brian and Al own the soul.

Reblogged from magic-transistor-radio:
MTR posted a chilling interview with Dennis Wilson from December 1968 in which he talked about his involvement with Charlie Manson. This was roughly 8 months before the famous murders. If you magnify the image, you can read the following last few paragraphs:

"I live in the woods in California, near Death Valley, with 17 girls. They’re space ladies. And they’d make a great group, I’m thinking of launching them as the Family Gems." How did you come to meet up with 17 girls?"It happened strangely. I went up into the mountains with my houseboy to take an LSD trip. We met two girls hitch-hiking. One of them was pregnant. We gave them a lift, and a purse was left in the car. About a month later, near Malibu, I saw the pregnant girl again, only this time she’d had her baby. I was overjoyed for her and it was through her that I met all the other girls. I told them about our involvement with the Maharishi and they told me they too had a guru, a guy named Charlie who’d recently come out of jail after 12 years. His mother was a hooker, his father was a gangster, he’d drifted into crime but when I met him I found he had great musical ideas. We’re writing together now. He’s dumb, in some ways, but I accept his approach and have learnt from him. He taught me a dance, The Inhibition. You have to imagine you’re a frozen man and the ice is thawing out. Start with your fingertips, then all the rest of you, then you extend it to a feeling that the whole universe is thawing out…”Are you supporting all these people?"No, if anything, they’re supporting me. I had all the rich status symbols — Rolls-Royce, Ferrari, home after home. Then I woke up, gave away 50-60% of my money. Now I live in one small room, with one candle, and I’m happy, finding myself."

IT IS VERY STRANGE THAT TWO OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE BANDS HAVE RELEASED ALBUMS ON THE SAME DAY: GUIDED BY VOICES AND THE BEACH BOYS.
Time Magazine, in partnership with Consequence of Sound reviews the new Beach Boys album here. That’s Why God Made The Radiois out today, but the vinyl is not due until July for some reason. Also, for a band that’s taking advantage on tour of selling opportunities like access to soundcheck and meet & greets, there does not seem to be any sort of deluxe version of this release (although the re-recording of “Do It Again” done for this LP shows up apparently only on the Japanese release as a bonus track).
Last night I received my vinyl copy of the second Guided by Voices album due in 2012, Class Clown Spots A UFO. My initial reaction after about 6 listens last night is that “now I know where all the pop nuggets that might’ve been on Let’s Go Eat The Factory are at!” Much more than that LP, this is music I’d like to hear played live.

Beach Boys / Brian Wilson playlist!

SUMMER IS COMING…

Over the years a number of Beach Boys & Brian Wilson tribute songs have come into play… so much so that a playlist was inevitable. Playmixt is going to the June 15th show at Merriweather Post Pavilion, and if anyone would be interested in meeting up and hanging out, please drop a line.

Southern California - Brian Wilson (“I had this dream… singing with my brothers…” if that doesn’t melt your heart, I don’t know what will)

Cannibal Surf Babe - Marillion (somewhat inspired by Pamela Anderson’s ‘Baywatch’ days, features the line: “Mr. Wilson, where’s your sandbox and your beard?”)

Since God Invented Girls - Elton John (“Now I know what Brian Wilson meant…”)

Brian Wilson - Brian Wilson (yes, he and his band covered the Barenaked Ladies tune live; perhaps the most meta-surreal rock moment in history)

Brian’s Back - the Beach Boys (duh)

At My Most Beautiful - R.E.M. (if this isn’t a tribute to Pet Sounds I’ll eat my vinyl copy of “Chronic Town”)

Brian Wilson - Barenaked Ladies ("Lyin’ in bed, just like Brian Wilson did…" not to mention, “Just listening and relistening to Smiley Smile…wondering if this is some creative drought,” or “And if you want to find me, I’ll be out in the sandbox, Wondering where the hell all the love has gone… Playing my guitar and building castles in the sun, and singing Fun, Fun, Fun…”)

One For The Boys - Brian Wilson (clearly a tribute in harmony to his bandmates)

Long May You Run - Neil Young (“Maybe the Beach Boys have got you now… with those waves singing Caroline <Oh Caroline No…>”)

I Write The Songs - Bruce Johnston (while this was a gigantic hit for Barry Manilow, it’s clearly about Brian… even though Bruce tends to deny it and attribute it to being more about the “spirit of music”)

Brian Wilson Said - Tears For Fears

I Love My Car - Belle and Sebastian (“I love my Carl, I love my Brian, my Dennis, my Al… I could even find it in my heart to love Mike Love…”)

The Beach Boys: That’s Why God Made The Radio.

A brand-new song for the reunion tour… and it’s pretty good.

THE (SURVIVING) BEACH BOYS WILL REUNITE ON THE GRAMMYS TONIGHT AS PART OF THEIR 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION.
YES, that includes Brian Wilson!
In the meantime, here’s an excellent article on SMiLE from Goldmine that explains not only the “Bicycle Rider” sections’ origin, but the inspiration for the American Indian references.

Beach Boys :: Unknown Harmony – 1968, A Capella
Looped a capella track (reportedly) culled from a 1968 studio session known in fan circles as “Unknown Harmony.” I copped this five or so years ago via the fan-made compilation You’re Welcome: A Beach Boys Sequel to SMiLE. From what I gather, the source material is thought to be clipped from the isolated vocal track of the Beach Boys “Break Away.”

The Beach Boys! with a tiki! Tiki is another interest here at Playmixt, so this is great. Also, note their plaid Pendleton shirts - the original name of the band was The Pendletones — their pre-Capitol label changed it to “The Beach Boys” before releasing “Surfin’”.
