Guided by Voices brings the power pop on their new single, “Class Clown Spots a UFO.”

It is a reworking of their long-lost classic, “Crocker’s Favorite Song,” aka another long-lost classic, “Up We Go.”

You can get it free from Rolling Stone, here.

It’s not the first iPod I’ve run into the ground; it probably won’t be the last. My beloved 160 GB Classic seems to have died a quiet death. It won’t mount in regular or disk mode, and I can’t even get to the drive to just wipe it entirely and start again.
Might anyone know when Apple may be refreshing the line? I don’t want to get something new and find out a new 240 GB Classic is coming in March. I’m firm in that I want the storage on the Classic; the Shuffle, Nano and Touch don’t do much for me. Yes, I’m that much of a music hog to require that much hard drive space in my pocket. Don’t you read this blog? You should know that by now.
Anyway, the song for the day is…Systems Crash by Guided by Voices.

THE CLUB WILL REOPEN:21 new songs on January 1, 2012 from…GUIDED BY VOICES.
Mojo has the story here of something entitled (at least right now!) Let’s Go Eat The Factory.  Favorite track title so far: “How I Met My Mother.”  Can’t imagine where Uncle Bob drew that inspiration from.  *grin*

Wonky cassette-sourced 1983 recording of a Guided By Voices song called “Walls and Windows,” later transformed into “Hardcore UFOs” from Bee Thousand. I think posting this makes me a curator. I hate the semi-sudden ubiquity of that word. But I love this song.

Getting to hear any unreleased early Guided By Voices reminds me of being a kid and getting to go to Disneyland or Fenway; which is to say - magical to me.  Though this song didn’t have too far to go to become Hardcore UFOs, there’s a mystique in its original form with different lyrics and a more chill jangly-psychedelic folk sound.  Fortunately, early working versions eventually seeing the light happens often in GBV-land, and it’s one of the reasons why loving them seems to endlessly pay off. You can hear Bob sing the first two lines to this song while he’s thumbing through a notebook of early lyrics on the Watch Me Jumpstart dvd.  It’s about 3/4 of the way through the bonus of Beautiful Plastic.

What’s the game Master John?
Have you been through wall & windows…

Big thanks to Jim Greer, once again.

A fine tribute.

Big Dipper - Robert Pollard

(There’s about a 10 second lag before the audio kicks in.)

Smiiiiiiiiiiile.  I admit it.  I get a little lump in my throat during the chorus.  Such a sucker.

The major stars are growing dim
And they fall around him
They’ve sputtered and they’ve faltered
None burn like Robert Pollard

I had no idea they’d appeared on MTV (videos on 120 Minutes aside)…

Links to a hitherto-unreleased Guided By Voices song from the aborted 1995 concept album The Power of Suck. Which is (coincidentally) the ttile of my next book.

It’s nice getting presents.

WANT TO HEAR AN UNRELEASED GUIDED BY VOICES SONG FROM THE ABORTED 1995 SESSIONS WITH STEVE ALBINI?
then examine the below, and listen accordingly - quickly!

Do you like hitherto unreleased songs from the 1995 Guided By Voices sessions w/ Steve Albini? For the never-released “The Power of Suck” concept abum? Maybe. Maybe not. No way to tell until you click on the photo. Link will be active for 24 hours only.

Quick, quick!  For the love of all things great, go listen.  You have 24 hours to keep it on repeat and burn it into your brain tapes until we get it and more back someday, which I’m hoping we will.

If you’re a fan of Guided by Voices, you really should be following James Greer’s blog.  Today’s entry covers Bob Pollard’s duet with Kim Deal on the classic rock track Love Hurts, as recorded for the soundtrack of the movie Love and a .45 .   I can attest the song was indeed released as a single (even if just promotionally), as I’ve got a copy of the CD single.
Click on the photo of Bob and Kim’s forehead, or here for more from James Greer - journalist and former GbV bassist.  All of his posts on the band are really engrossing stories that add further color to his book on the band, Hunting Accidents.

"This one is on the (White?) House… and this one is better than ever…"
The Daily Swarm reports that White House Spokesman Jay Carney is a Guided by Voices fan. Do you think Bob will change the lyrics of Hot Freaks as quoted above?
GUIDED BY VOICES, the Trocadero, Philadelphia, PA.  November 6, 2010.  The third-to-last show on the Hallway of Shatter Proof Glass Tour, only followed by two in NYC.  One of those is on New Year’s Eve.
The lads were in fine form this evening, very tight and not as much goofing around during Lethargy as they’d done in DC.  The venue was pretty neat; an old-time theater that had been home to burlesque shows in the early 1900s.  There was a show poster available that incorporated some of the Phillies logo touches into the letters “GBV” — a shot of that poster will be forthcoming in photo here on Playmixt.
It’s difficult to express what seeing these guys playing together again means to me, but it’s something I’ve been ruminating on awhile now.  It’s been 2 weeks since the last show (DC) and there’s a wave of really awesome things that have been happening to me since then.  Keep in mind you can download show recordings via GBVdigital.com

This is Mitch Mitchell.  Not Jimi Hendrix Experience Mitch Mitchell, but Dayton’s own Mitch Mitchell.  He plays in Guided by Voices.  He is a rock god.
More on GBV in DC is forthcoming.
