The Boatman Calls… Back.

—Playmixt instant review of Push the Sky Away by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, on just one listen.

Note: that’s not a bad thing - it’s got a mellow-yet-dark vibe that is just what I need at this point in my life.

My friend Rett over @RockLyricOfTheDay on the twitter machine is working up a theme this week. The theme is…MURDER.

When it comes to murder, Nick Cave’s “The Ballad of Robert Moore and Betty Coltrane” is an entire pulp fiction novel in an action-packed and perfectly composed 3:35. My favorite killer line is when Robert addresses Betty directly (no spoilers!). Killer tune, and I was surprised to find a fan-made video on the YouTube. Enjoy it directly, won’t you?

NICK & NEKO.CAVE & CASE. TRUE BLOOD.
Hear their cover of She’s Not There here at KCRW.
Found this out via Neko Case’s Twitter Machine.  She’s Not There will be available on iTunes after the season premiere.  Also, on HBO GO you can watch the 2nd episode a week early — immediately after the premiere.

From Pitchfork we get the tale: Nick Cave and Neko Case (who’ve played shows together before, have had the chance to see that bill at the 9:30 before she could sell it out on her own) are teaming up on a cover of the Zombies classic She’s Not There for the upcoming season of HBO’s True Blood, which returns on June 26.  More on this here at Pitchfork.

The legendary Slicing Up Eyeballs blog (the name is a Pixies reference!) has the story about the next batch of deluxe Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds reissues.  These are 2 disc sets with the second disc being a 5.1 surround mix of the album plus some videos.  Am almost disappointed yet not entirely surprised that Live Seeds isn’t making the cut, as the recording of a live album may often prevent such remixing.
Anyway, the next discs coming out on May 16 are:
Let Love In
Murder Ballads
The Boatman’s Call
No More Shall We Part

From our WHAT THE WHAT?!!  department…
The Guardian reports that Nick Cave’s writing the screenplay for the reboot of THE CROW.   No idea what to make of that… would he do the music for the film too?
one additional tidbit: the script for a potential GLADIATOR sequel commissioned by Russell Crowe was also written by Cave.  Intriguementful.

The Cat Piano is an animated short narrated by Nick Cave

It’s gorgeous. Made by the People’s Republic of Animation. You can find more info on the film here, and some historical info about the “Katzenklavier” here at Wikipedia. Note: this may not be suitable for children.  If you’re a cat-lover, some of the subject matter may be disturbing.  Would Nick Cave be involved if it weren’t?

NICK.CAVE.+.BAD.SEEDS>REISSUES

Slicing Up Eyeballs has the goods on these… but up through Henry’s Dream is coming out in 2CD editions with 5.1 surround mixes.  Holy hell, do these sound pretty cool.  Imagine Nick coming at you in the center channel while them Bad Seeds surround you.  Scary!

"I am damned," thinks Bunny Munro...in a sudden moment of self-awareness reserved for those who are soon to die.

NICK CAVE TO PUBLISH NEW NOVEL IN SEPTEMBER 2009
Nick Cave’s debut novel “And The Ass Saw The Angel” was pretty highly acclaimed.  Upon reading it, my reaction was one of astonishment that an Aussie could write so many characters so well in a Southern U.S. dialect.  Usually books in written in dialect annoy me (Trainspotting, Blood Meridian to name a few), but Cave’s book was a pretty good dose of southern gothic, and is recommended reading for fans of that genre or even of his music.  Fans of his music may recognize characters from his songs in the novel.  The themes of retribution and old-testament style vengeance that you encounter in his music persist in his 1989 novel.

Not sure why it took so long (although he and his band are certainly prolific), but 20 years later, Nick Cave is set to publish a second novel.  It’s called "The Death Of Bunny Munro," and is due out September 1 in the US.  There are going to be multiple versions of this thing, including an audiobook and a deluxe version.  On the book’s official website, you can sign up for updates and you can also click on the title of this post to go to the site to hear an excerpt from the audiobook, which Cave himself reads.  Or click here for that page.

September 2009 is looking to be a very expensive month: Beatles remasters, Beatles Rock Band, Big Star Box, Nick Cave book/audiobook… yargh.
