Riding home tonight down I-270 heading back to our corner of Maryland, I slipped the iPod over to the thrilling conclusion of BLACK LOVE by The Afghan Whigs. The final 3 tracks, Bulletproof, Summer’s Kiss and Faded, have been the ultimate triptych in the encore section of their set. Since we’d just seen the band perform the very same in DC Friday and Pittsburgh Saturday, it seemed the perfect capper to a triumphant weekend.
What’s amazing is… somehow I was able to completely sync up the playlist to our drive, with us pulling up to the house as the final notes of Faded indeed faded out into the night. It was glorious, dark, exuberant and weary all at the same time.

The AFGHAN WHIGS blew the roof off the 9:30 Club in DC last night. And the doors. And burned the place to the ground. And made off with all the women. It was shocking in the end, and you realized what was happening… but after cranking out two hours of legendary live show, it was all entirely worth it. Let’s do it again tonight in Pittsburgh.
If you go, check the merch table; they’re selling a live CD from the NYC show in May.
I am expecting the city of Pittsburgh to undergo a similar deflowering this evening, and there will probably be reports of at least one river missing prior to the Steelers game. Greg Dulli is in phenomenal voice on this tour, and if you ever lamented not seeing them in their heyday, go see them on this tour. Their heyday is now.
The setlist was (corrections may be edited in later - don’t look if you don’t want spoilers):
Crime scene part one
I’m her slave
What jail is like
Who do you love/Fountain and Fairfax
When we two parted
Turn on the water/The End
You my flower
See and don’t see
Edge of seventeen/going to town
Miles Iz Ded/?
Bulletproof/where did our love go?
I’ll be waiting for you, on…

IT IS ON.
