In the wake of Whitney Houston’s death, I went looking up “I Will Always Love You,” which brought some interesting information. Elvis Presley wanted to record the song, but when Colonel Parker discussed their usual terms (Elvis got 50% songwriting credit for any tune he recorded), Dolly Parton took her song and walked.
Dolly apparently did write it for Porter Wagoner, whom she was splitting with at the time. She hit #1 twice with it - the second time when it was redone for the soundtrack of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
John Doe of X is another artist who covered the song; his version actually appears in a scene in The Bodyguard, playing on a jukebox.
Whitney was actually supposed to cover “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” by Jimmy Ruffin as the lead-off single from the soundtrack. When it became known that the upcoming Fried Green Tomatoes movie was using that song, Whitney requested another tune. Kevin Costner brought her Linda Ronstadt’s cover of Dolly’s song, and she re-arranged it with David Foster.
