Kids, back in the day when CDs first came out, the industry did not want to screw with the record stores’ bin depth, nor lose the large-sized artwork LPs had.
So they put the discs in what’s known as a “longbox” because it was indeed a long box which would fit in a rack deep enough for LPs. After everyone realized what a preposterous waste of paper this all was, the practice was discontinued.
Still remember fondly the office I worked in where an ongoing line of longboxes was being mounted to the wall like an odd border. Wish we had pictures of that.
