Is this the guitar that changed music?
Two History Detectives dive into the provenance of a Fender Stratocaster that the owner claims was used by Bob Dylan at his legendary 1965 plugged-in performance at the Newport Folk Festival.
Be sure to tune in to the History Detectives season premiere on Tuesday, July 17, 2012, at 9 p.m. ET.

“I pulled into Nazareth…
was feelin’ ‘bout half past dead…”
—-The Weight by The Band
It’s not too well known a fact that the reference to Nazareth in The Weight is not a Biblical reference, but a nod to Nazareth, Pennsylvania, which is the home to the Martin Guitar factory. Robbie Robertson has told the story in a few documentaries about how a simple trip begets friends asking for favors, making a burden out of a brief trip, and that led to the writing of the tune.
PBS’ America Revealed visits the C.F. Martin & Co. factory in the Wednesday night show that closes out its 4-episode run. The series has been examining different systems in the United States, from how we get our food, to air traffic control, to manufacturing. Yul Kwon, winner of the Cook Islands edition of Survivor, is the host of the program, which is a fascinating look at how America works. It’s airing Wednesday night on most PBS stations, but as always… check your local listings.

It’s funny how this popped up so soon after Levon’s passing.

Y’all might enjoy one of these while watching PEARL JAM TWENTY on PBS this coming Friday, October 21 (or On Demand right now!).
Packaging is complete and in the next few days, Faithfull Ale, our celebration of Pearl Jam’s 20th anniversary as a band and its extraordinary debut album, “Ten,” will be hitting the market.

Notes on on the 9/20 AFI Silver screening Cameron Crowe’s film PEARL JAM TWENTY:
Some amazing performance footage of Mother Love Bone performing with a very live Andrew Wood (who comes across as very glam rock, almost as a member of Poison)
Sheer “no way do they have this” moments like footage of PJ’s second-ever show
Fairly chronological structure, and not much emphasis on an album-by-album review of their career. I only point this out because the first 2 records seem to get a fair shake in regards to screentime, but by Vitalogy (which to me is their “White Album”), the records are side-tracked by stories like the Ticketmaster battle
The true reason the debut is called “Ten”
Limited voiceover by Cameron Crowe
Knowing comparison to The Who documentary, The Kids Are Alright, to which (I think) Mike McCready says, “No way - that was all genius, and this will be… all us.”
Great to see it in a loud theater, the AFI in Silver Spring was a terrific venue
Detail and attention paid to the first ten years, after that… it’s a blur (No Code, Yield, Avocado and Backspacer are barely mentioned)
Eddie performing MLB’s “Crown Of Thorns” on PJ’s 10th Anniversary
Tons of great live footage
A real sense of the vortex of fame and success that the band found itself in very early
Kurt and Eddie dancing together
The effect the Roskilde tragedy had on the band
Further amazing moments like “Daughter” being written on the bus
Wholly recommended to anyone who likes rock music — and it will be airing on PBS stations (check local listings) on October 21. Go here for more info.
In answer to the trivia question I posted the other day, Jeff Ament came up with a cassette insert for Citizen Dick’s “album” on the set of Singles, and one of the titles he listed was… Spoonman. Soundgarden worked on the song for the soundtrack, and an early acoustic version can apparently be heard in the background of one scene.
Today’s trivia question… What’s the name of the instrumental track that opens and closes Ten?
