Things that make Playmixt happy:

This video mashup will fascinate you: Thin Lizzy vs. Pixies!

"If Elvis Presley was the King of Rock and Roll, Greg Dulli is its Count of Monte Cristo…"

A great opening quote from the Caught in the Carousel review of Dynamite Steps by The Twilight Singers.  The band has just released a live compilation from Europe shows, and you can buy it here.

From a review posted at Brooklyn Vegan, here is a surprisingly good video of the Twilight Singers performing The Killer in NYC.

Most Unsettling Videos: Miles Iz Ded by the Afghan Whigs.

Playmixt doesn’t mind telling you that he’s been on a mental high since catching Greg Dulli and his Twilight Singers at the 9:30 Club this week.  Have been revisiting all those Afghan Whigs albums, and it prompted me to look up whether there were any stories about the songs’ origins.

Greg sang a snippet of Miles Iz Ded on Monday night, the unlabeled closing track off of Congregation.  Why was it unlabeled?  Wikipedia has what appears to be an answer:

The album was already done when singer Greg Dulli received indirect inspiration on the day Miles Davis passed. Dulli checked his answering machine; there were two messages. The first was from music-biz veteran David Katznelson, providing directions to a cookout. The second, also from Katznelson, was just seven words long: “Miles is dead. Don’t forget the alcohol.” Dulli had his lyric, guitarist Rick McCollum had the riff, and the rest fell into place in the studio hastily, giving us an Afghan Whigs classic and a glimpse of what was to come on their seminal 1993 album Gentlemen. (Recorded at Ultrasuede Studio, Northside.)

In the meantime, enjoy the video for Miles Iz Ded, by the beloved Afghan Whigs.  It’s a pretty unsettling video, and I’m adding it to that collection.

Playmixt was out on the town on a school night Monday in order to catch the Twilight Singers blowing up their Dynamite Steps tour.  They burned the 9:30 Club to the ground in a blazing set and encore.

The Daily Swarm has an interesting interview and free MP3 download of a non-album track from Greg Dulli of Twilight Singers.

Over at Mojo there’s a blog post about the trend of performing entire albums live - and whether that’s a bad trend for rock.  I’ve seen a few albums performed live:

Brian Wilson - Pet Sounds, SMiLE
Love - Forever Changes
The Who - Quadrophenia (twice in 1996)
The Musical Box  - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
[note: TMB is Peter Gabriel-era Genesis tribute, with full staging, original instrumentation, costumes & slideshow]
Sugar - Beaster

And all of these were excellent shows.  They were albums I was absolutely enamored of, and seeing them in concert was truly an experience.  That being said, I recall my cousin discussing seeing Husker Du on their Warehouse tour and they just came out and played the album in sequence.  He said he left because it was boring.

It’s interesting to note that all of these shows were decades after the album’s original release, apart from Sugar’s tour, but Beaster was really only an EP.  That suggests to me that some measure of distance is required before the appreciation of an album in a live concert setting.  Either that or the presence of Bob Mould!

Albums I’d probably enjoy seeing performed live, start to finish:

Big Star - Radio City or #1 Record or Third
Drive-by Truckers - Southern Rock Opera or Decoration Day or Brighter Than Creation’s Dark
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
The Twilight Singers - Blackberry Belle
The Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen or 1965
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
The Affordable Floors - Drumming on the Walls
Sugar - Copper Blue

What do you think about classic albums played live?   Any you want to hear?

NEW TWILIGHT SINGERS ALBUM IN 2010?
The only good Twilight things in my book are:
the actual time of day
the early U2 song (maybe).
“Twilight Campfighter” by Guided by Voices
and the band that adds the word “Singers.”
Looks this last one like a new album is in the works, possibly for release this year - Spin has the scoop direct from Greg Dulli himself:
How far along are you with the record? I have a deadline of April 1, but my pride wants me to come in a little bit earlier, so hopefully I’ll be coming up to NYC sometime around the end of March to master it and get ready to go.
