JAY FARRAR GETS HIS TURN AT THE WOODY GUTHRIE SONGBOOK, along with Will Johnson, Anders Parker, and Yim Yames
2012 would’ve been Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday, and on the heels of that comes news of a few projects of note. March sees a deluxe box set of the Billy Bragg & Wilco Mermaid Avenue project, where the Guthrie estate had those artists create music for songs Woody wrote but never got to record.
Brand-new is a collaboration from Son Volt’s Jay Farrar working with Will Johnson (of Centro-Matic), Anders Parker (who played with Farrar in Gob Iron and was in Varnaline) and Yim Yames (of My Morning Jacket) doing the same thing, recording Guthrie tunes from the archive. I’m really liking the samples I’m hearing from the disc’s Amazon web page, and it’ll be available on CD, vinyl as well as a deluxe 2CD edition. Release date is February 28.
They’ve started a Facebook page for this project, and will be playing limited dates beginning in March. For more on New Multitudes, check out the official website.
